Yellowstone Park (Lamar):  Leaders | Lodging Info

Great for beginners! Through classroom and field sessions you’ll practice incorporating the sensory experience of being outdoors—temperatures, sights, sounds, lighting, and atmosphere—into your own paintings. You’ll also improve your skill with composition, color theory, and painting in changing outdoor conditions.

Since 2015, Daniel & Kara Hidalgo have lead a Yellowstone National Park retreat.  Daniel has been a Yellowstone guest artist for fifteen years and knows the Park inside and out.  The retreat is based out of the Yellowstone Institute classroom in Gardner, Montana.  This is your chance to network and learn from other artists as well as the leaders.

WHAT IS INCLUDED?
Tuition and transportation within the Park are included.  This year, lodging is not being provided by the Yellowstone Institute but the Institute's Overlook Campus may be available. For more information, please contact the Institute at 406-848-2400.
All meals are on your own. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to/from the airport (Bozeman, MT is 2.5 hrs away) and to/from their place of lodging and the Gardner, MT classroom each day.

SMALL GROUP RETREAT
There are usually 10 - 15 participants total, including the leaders.

INSTRUCTION
This is the only retreat where classroom instruction is given.  It is great for beginners and beginners are encouraged to sign up. There will be a demonstration the first morning. After that, the leaders are there to offer guidance and advice as you paint.  Afternoons are a great time to be in the classroom (not required) to learn techniques or problem solve with the leaders.  These class times are kept fluid, to answer the questions that arise at that time. You are always welcome to paint alongside the leaders if they are painting!  Sometimes they are too busy walking among the artists to paint with you.  As plein air painting has a large learning curve, this is mostly about people painting together for camaraderie and sharing the experience of creating art on location, en plein air.  At lunchtime, we'll do a Show & Tell peer critique where you'll have opportunities to learn from all the artists. Read about Peer Critiques to learn more.

*NOTICE: Plein Air in the Parks' Yellowstone retreat is a collaboration with Yellowstone Forever Institute and the National Park Service.  This retreat is entitled "Painting Moran's Yellowstone" in the Institute catalog.  The Yellowstone Forever Institute website is HERE.  Please call us at (208) 932-0893 to answer all your questions and help you get registered through the Institute.
